This patch fixes a nasty bug in Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1 first discovered by Steve Jasik.
The manifestation of the bug is random tromping of memory, and sometimes it corrupts the heap (this happens when an application is launched). The problem is that some programmer did a Load Contents when he meant to do a Load Address.
What the patch does:
This patch replaces the value $83 in the nlib resource ID=11 at offset $1968 with $3B, thus inserting the correct command. This is what Steve recommends to fix the bug.
How to apply the patch:
1. Make a copy of your System file by option-dragging it to the Desktop.
2. Run the patcher. Read the information in the popup window.
3. When asked "Where is System?", select the copy you just made on the desktop and let the patcher do its work.
4. Drag your original System file from the System Folder to somewhere else on your hard disk.
5. Drag the patched copy from the Desktop into the System Folder
6. Restart your computer.
Should any problems arise, start up from th CD-ROM that came with your computer and replace the patched copy with the original System file.
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS RUN THIS PATCHER ON A COPY OF YOUR SYSTEM FILE, NEVER ON THE ORIGINAL OR ON AN ACTIVE SYSTEM FILE!
